Questions?

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the typical session frequency?
A: I can give you an average frequency; your specific session frequency may be different. Most couples attend counseling once a week for 4 to 8 weeks. Between 4 to 8 weeks couples typically transition to attending a session once every other week. After things have improved, some couples decide to end counseling, but some prefer to attend once a month just to check in for a little bit to make sure they are keeping the changes they have made.

If something unexpected or stressful comes up, you are welcome to set up a new session earlier than our planned session frequency. I am here to support you.

Appointments are very flexible to fit your budget and schedule. Some clients prefer more more frequent and more intensive appointments, while others prefer a traditional once a week to once every other week schedule. Couples who prefer to move forward quickly will want to schedule longer sessions more frequently.

Q: What can I expect when I attend couples counseling?
Click here for a helpful blog post on that topic: I'm new to counseling and confused where to start! What to expect in couples counseling at MoxiePsychology Legacy. It will give you a peek into the "black box" of the couples counseling process so it isn't so mysterious anymore!

Q: Do you see gay or lesbian couples?
A: Yes. I am an LGBTQ ally here in Springfield, Missouri. I want to step up, stop hate, and be a resource for LGBTQ community.

Q: Is this a Christian-focused couples counseling program?
A: No, my products and services are specifically designed to be inclusive, secular, and research-based. They would best fit clients who are not looking for Christian-focused couples counseling. I work with clients with varying religious and spiritual beliefs. I will show respect and understanding for all my clients, no matter their religious background. If your religion or spiritual beliefs are an important part of your life and you would like to include aspects of it into your goals, we can definitely do that. I am here to support your religious and spiritual journey in life from your perspective, and not my own.

Q: What is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist?
A: A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is a counselor, but specifically a relationship and communication specialist. They either have a masters or doctorate in counseling. You can go to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy to find out more.

Q: Will couples counseling work for me?
A: The best possible outcome of your time in counseling happens when both people are willing grow and participate fully while in session. This also includes doing the homework and assigned readings. I will be your guide and relationship expert, but it will take practice, time, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. It's even possible for couples to heal from affairs or other experiences that are traumatic for a couple (I have seen many couples grow stronger after an affair when they put their full heart into the couples counseling process), but only when both are willing to grow and put in the effort to make vital changes for the health of their relationship. Sadly, if one or both parties is not willing to stop harmful behaviors such as addictions, verbal abuse, physical abuse, or boundary violations the chances of success in treatment are much lower and not likely. Your readiness for change and a willingness to commit to the process is something to consider before beginning couples counseling.

Q: Do you do individual counseling?
A: Yes, I do! See the blog here for more information.

Q: How many total sessions will we need to attend?
A: Every couple and every individual is different.

In general, for couples, if there has been an affair or other trauma, these issues tend take longer in treatment due to the emotional healing involved. Communication based treatment typically takes less time. Each couple is different, and so there is no guarantee for how long it will take to see the changes you would like. The length of time also greatly depends on what your goals are.

What I can tell you is that I will communicate with you throughout your treatment about your progress, where you feel you have improved, where you still want to make improvements, and when you might be ready to complete treatment. You can always ask me questions about your overall progress at any time.
