I am so grateful for our relationship and the journeys we take together.
Your courage inspires me.
Here’s to new adventures!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving next week.
Be safe, have fun, enjoy the people you love, and eat pie!

From Holly at MoxiePsychology Legacy.

Hello!

Are you getting all geared up for Thanksgiving? We did a test run this past weekend for two different gluten free and dairy free pumpkin pie recipes, and they both turned out great (my daughter has celiac disease, I'm gluten intolerant, and we both avoid dairy as much as possible). It's always exciting when our family can find a replacement recipe that is as satisfying as the original! I have to give the credit to my husband though—he found the recipes and made them amazing. Thank you Nathan!

Just a reminder that the office will be closed the week of Thanksgiving (11/25/19 through 11/29/19); during that time I will be visiting family in Iowa and Minnesota. Regular office hours will resume on Monday, 12/2/19. There will be no blog and no newsletter next week.

I think it's important to nurture gratitude and appreciation in my life, and you may have heard me talk before about the importance of sharing appreciation daily with those around you (especially with your close loved ones). So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving and thinking of all the things I'm grateful for, I just want to take a moment to say thank you to past clients, present clients, and readers of my blog.

To past and present clients, thank you for giving me the opportunity to take a journey of growing with you. I never take that for granted. I am amazed, proud, and in awe of the incredible bravery you show in facing your goals, fears, and dreams head on. That takes a lot of guts and it's really hard sometimes, but totally worth it. Thank you for trusting me with such personal and close to the heart topics. I really do love what I do, and I look forward to supporting you every week.

To my blog and newsletter readers, thank you so much for following along. I am so pumped for the Lega-Leaders out there who are making an impact on the people around them in big and little ways that ripple out for the better. I hope this is a place where you find ideas and inspiration for simple changes you can make so you can be the kind of person you want to be. Thanks again for your support, and thank you for being a brave leader who values mental health and relationship health. You are making a huge difference in the world.

Talk to you again in a couple weeks!

All the best,
Holly

Recent State, National, and World News on Mental Health

Hello Friend,

This is an exciting time to be a mental health professional. Our culture is slowly breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, and we are steadily refining our approach to treatment (and prevention) in order to reach more people and to provide higher quality mental health coverage.

My dream for the United States is that we provide excellent mental health crisis and inpatient services, high quality outpatient services, and consistent preventative/mental health maintenance measures (for all ages but especially for children). We still have a long way to go, but we are making some progress.

There has been increased news coverage on mental health and I think that this is helping increase our awareness of people who are going through mental health struggles (like Conan O'Brien for instance who shares his personal struggles with mental health in this interview), and also what resources are out there (1). The news is also highlighting where we can make improvements (often sadly from significant failures).

I gathered links to recent news articles that I think you will find interesting (especially for you Lega-Leaders out there). These articles span state, national, and world news on the topic of mental health. Click on the topic summary to go to the news website.

1. State (Missouri)
Topic: Patients in Missouri waiting months for psychiatric and mental health services (2).

2. National
Topic: You probably are aware of 911 for emergencies, right? Well, there is a proposal for a national number (988) for mental health emergencies (3).

Topic: In Oregon there is a team called CAHOOTS that responds to mental health crises instead of police (4).

3. World
Topic: In the UK there is a program in place that teaches kids about mental health self-care measures in the hopes of helping kids manage their emotions, and also to try to prevent mental health disorders from developing in the first place (5).

Topic: University of Toronto Mississauga student handcuffed after seeking mental health services for suicidal thoughts and how this is sparking conversation on where the school can continue to make improvements on their services (6).

On a different note, just a reminder about the office closing on Thanksgiving:
Closed Dates: Monday, November 25th through Friday, November 29th.

In Summary:
The mental health field offers a variety of services that are helpful and effective. That being said, there are still a lot of improvements that need to be made in order to reach people in the same way that we do with physical health. Improvements will need to come from all sectors, and all different parts of the community. All of us will have a different role to play in making progress, but each of us is important.

I am so grateful that as a society and a world we are having more open and honest conversations about mental health (the good, the bad, and the ugly). We must have regular dialogue on these topics if we want any change to happen, and mental health professionals need to be open to feedback and be willing to think outside the box (like the CAHOOTS mobile crisis team). Any thoughts or comments on the mental health field or on any of the news articles above? Please comment below or send me a private message on my feedback form (7).

Want to know how you can do something right now? Share the news articles with a family member, friend, or trusted colleague. Have a discussion. What do they think? Ask them their viewpoints on the various issues and what their experiences have been. You just might learn something really interesting, and you might even learn how these issues are actually a challenge for your own social network (but you just never talked about it). And guess what? Just by you initiating and encouraging discussion you are taking huge steps towards breaking the stigma of taking care of your mental and relationship health.

Talk to you next week. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

All the best,
Holly

Child Anxiety Resource, Local Event for Kids and Loss, Updated Appointment Hours, and Thanksgiving Holiday Closing Dates

Hi there,

In today's blog I will share an awesome parenting resource I found and also a neat local community mental health (kids) event you might be interested in to help kids cope with grief. At the end of the blog I will give you an update on regular business hours and when I'll be closed for Thanksgiving.

1. Awesome Parenting Resource:
First, do you wonder about how to help your child deal with stress? Do you have a child that struggles with overwhelming anxiety? Do you feel it's important to prepare your child with healthy anxiety/stress coping habits (since everyone feels overwhelmed and anxious at times)? Check out this podcast from NPR called Life Kit: Parenting, that specifically covers the topic of kids and anxiety (1):
I want to emphasize that all kids have anxiety sometimes just like all adults do. Some kids and some adults have more anxiety (or depressed moods) than others that may even meet clinical criteria for a mood disorder; however, dealing with stress is a normal part of the human condition. We can't change that we have stress, but we can find healthy ways to manage it. I think we can all benefit from continuing to grow our own healthy coping strategies in addition to modeling and teaching our kids useful mental health habits. Furthermore, doing this this moves our society to a more prevention based approach and healthy habits based approach, in comparison to just reacting to severe issues when they occur.
2. Local Event For Kids To Help Them With Grief and Loss:
Do you have a child dealing with loss? Are you as a parent struggling with ways to talk to your child about it? Well, our local library system is putting on a special event this Saturday (November 9th), from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (2). Author and illustrator Cori Doerrfeld will read and discuss her two books she wrote specifically to help kids deal with loss and difficult emotions. For more info, click here (3). There is also a whole host of events (for adults too) that help with loss. Click the link above for all the details.

3. Updated Business Hours For Scheduling Appointments:
Monday through Thursday, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

4. Thanksgiving Holiday Closing Dates:
I am traveling to see family up in Iowa and Minnesota during the week of Thanksgiving (cross your fingers for me that no blizzard decides to make things more interesting for us)! The office will be totally closed during the week of Thanksgiving, and there will be no newsletter that week.

Closed Dates: Monday, November 25th through Friday, November 29th.

Thanks for reading! Can't believe Thanksgiving is almost here... Where did October go? Talk to you next week Lega-Leader.

All the best,
Holly
